About our study

What happens in the study? How is the study being conducted?

The study consists of two different parts: an online-questionnaire (avaliable in print on request) and an interview.

  • The questionnaire covers basic information and objective data about the family
  • There are special questionnaires for the gender variant parent, the partner and for children.
  • During the interview, we would like to get to know your personal story with your experiences, problems and conflicts during the transitioning process.

The interview takes about an hour of your time, either in the comfort of your home or at the UKE in Hamburg, Germany.

Why should I participate in the study?

With our study, we want to research family dynamics of families with a gender variant parents in order to better understand those families. We would like to inform professionals and the public about the topic and raise awareness. We hope to improve the situation of those families by helping build special support systems for families during and after the transitioning process.

Why do we need a study about children of gender variant parents?

Currently, the topic of gender variant parents is poorly researched. We want to change that in order to understand family dynamics, special ressources and potential issues within families.

With your participation you help us to research topics that have already been thoroughly researched in traditional family constellations for a long time.

I decided to participate.
Does my whole family need to participate in the study?

To get comprehensive data and an objective picture of family dynamics, we would appreciate as many family members (gender variant person, partner, children) as possible participating in the study. However, if this is not possible for any reason we would still very much appreciate your participation.

I don't live anywhere near to Hamburg. Can I still participate in the study?

For the online-questionnaires, your location doesn't matter. The questionnaires can be filled out anywhere in the world. If you don't have time to fill out the whole questionnaire at once, you may save your answers and proceed at your convenience. After completing the questionnaire, we will try to make an appointment with you for the interviews. The interviews can be conducted in your own home or at any other location. Currently, we are only planning on conducting interviews in the German-speaking parts of europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland etc.). However, you are very welcome to contact us if you live elsewhere as this may change in the future.

If we cannot conduct an interview with you, we would still appreciate you filling out the questionnaire.

Who is conducting the study? With whom am I speaking during the interview?
